How to use WhatsApp in ChatGPT: a step-by-step guide for 2026
By Patrick Alex, CEO of SyncZap · Published
To use WhatsApp in ChatGPT today, you add a WhatsApp MCP connector to ChatGPT as a custom connector, authorize it with OAuth and choose which chats it may read. ChatGPT can then search, summarize and draft replies to those chats, and every message it sends waits for your confirmation. This guide walks through the whole setup, what works and what to watch out for.
What changed: ChatGPT no longer lives inside WhatsApp
Until January 15, 2026 you could chat with ChatGPT by messaging the 1-800-ChatGPT number on WhatsApp. OpenAI ended that service after WhatsApp changed its Business API terms to bar general-purpose AI assistants. Many tutorials still describe the old number, so if you followed one and nothing answers, that is why. We explain the change in 1-800-ChatGPT on WhatsApp ended: what to use now.
The direction is now reversed. Instead of putting ChatGPT inside WhatsApp, you bring your WhatsApp chats into ChatGPT. That is possible because ChatGPT accepts remote MCP servers (Model Context Protocol) as custom connectors, and a WhatsApp MCP server exposes your chats as tools ChatGPT can call when you ask.
What you need before you start
- A ChatGPT plan that allows custom connectors. Today that means Plus, Pro, Business or a higher plan; OpenAI changes plan features often, so check your settings.
- The WhatsApp number you already use, on your phone. No new number, no Business API account and no Meta templates.
- A WhatsApp MCP service. This guide uses SyncZap, which runs the connection on its servers so your computer does not need to stay on. The steps are similar for other hosted connectors.
Step by step: connect WhatsApp to ChatGPT
- 1
Create your SyncZap account
Start the 7-day free trial. Your organization is created right away with every feature unlocked.
- 2
Link WhatsApp with the QR code
In the panel, open Connections and click Connect WhatsApp. On your phone, open WhatsApp → Linked devices → Link a device and scan the code. SyncZap joins as a linked device, like WhatsApp Web.
- 3
Choose the chats ChatGPT may read
In Chats, turn on sync for the conversations the assistant may read, or have an owner or admin switch on Sync all conversations. Chats without active sync are never read.
- 4
Add the MCP server in ChatGPT
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Plugins, click Browse directory, then Add → Add custom MCP server. Name it SyncZap, choose Server URL and paste the URL below, and pick OAuth as the authentication.
- 5
Authorize and pick the organization
On the SyncZap screen that opens, sign in, choose the organization and click Allow access. Keep the send option checked if ChatGPT may send messages (only owners and admins see it).
- 6
Ask your first question
In a new ChatGPT conversation, enable SyncZap and ask something like the examples below.
https://synczap.ai/mcpThe same steps, with troubleshooting for each screen, are in the ChatGPT connection guide.
See SyncZap in action (video, 3 min)Patrick Alex, CEO of SyncZap, shows connecting, choosing chats, and ChatGPT and Claude reading, summarizing and replying with confirmation.Prompts that work well
- “Which customers are still waiting for a reply since yesterday?”
- “Summarize the sales group from this week in five bullet points, with who asked for what.”
- “Find the address Maria sent me last month.”
- “Draft a polite reply to João confirming delivery on Friday.” (You review the exact text before anything is sent.)
- “Transcribe the last voice note from the supplier and list the prices it mentions.” (Voice notes need the Pro plan or higher.)
Be specific about the person, group and period. The assistant only sees chats you synced, so “all my chats” means all synced chats. For more examples, see WhatsApp in ChatGPT.
How sending works (and why it asks first)
ChatGPT never sends a WhatsApp message on its own. It first prepares the message, then shows you the recipient and the exact text, and only sends after you confirm. Each confirmation is valid for that recipient and that text only, and every send carries an idempotency key, so a retry never sends the message twice. Marking a chat as read and reacting with an emoji are the only actions without confirmation.
Privacy: what ChatGPT can and cannot see
- Only chats with active sync are stored and readable. Turning sync off for a chat hides what was saved.
- Photos, voice notes and documents stay on your phone. When you open one or ask for an AI reading, SyncZap downloads a temporary copy that is deleted 24 hours later; the transcript is kept as text.
- Names, messages and captions are passed to ChatGPT as third-party data, never as instructions, which reduces prompt-injection risk.
- You can revoke access in ChatGPT at any time, or unlink the device on your phone. Details are on the security page.
Common problems and fixes
- No “Add custom MCP server” option: your ChatGPT plan or workspace may not allow custom connectors yet; in Business and Enterprise workspaces an admin may need to enable them.
- ChatGPT says it cannot find a chat: check that sync is on for that chat in the SyncZap panel. History before you connected depends on what your phone sends to linked devices and on your plan (up to 1,000 older messages on Plus and Pro, everything the phone has from Max).
- The assistant does not offer to send: the account that authorized may not be an owner or admin, or the send option was unchecked. Reconnect and keep it checked.
- WhatsApp shows the device as disconnected: phones sometimes unlink devices after long inactivity. Scan the QR code again in Connections.
How much it costs
The trial is free for 7 days with every feature. After that, SyncZap plans range from $10 to $53.99 per month per organization; see pricing. Your ChatGPT subscription is separate.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT connect to WhatsApp?
Yes, through a WhatsApp MCP server added to ChatGPT as a custom connector. ChatGPT then reads the chats you choose to sync and drafts replies you confirm. There is no built-in WhatsApp integration made by OpenAI.
Can ChatGPT send WhatsApp messages for me?
With SyncZap, yes, but only after you see the recipient and the exact text and confirm. Without the send permission, ChatGPT can only read and draft.
Do I need ChatGPT Plus?
You need a ChatGPT plan that allows custom MCP connectors; today that is Plus, Pro, Business or higher. The free plan is not on that list.
Does my computer need to stay on?
No. SyncZap keeps the linked device running on its servers, so syncing continues with your browser closed.
Is it the official WhatsApp API?
No. SyncZap connects your number as a linked device, like WhatsApp Web. It is not Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform and does no bulk messaging.
