1-800-ChatGPT on WhatsApp ended: why, and what to use now
By Patrick Alex, CEO of SyncZap · Published
The 1-800-ChatGPT number stopped answering on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026. OpenAI shut it down because WhatsApp changed its Business API terms to bar general-purpose AI assistants. You can still use ChatGPT with your WhatsApp, but the direction changed: your chats now go into ChatGPT, through the ChatGPT app or an MCP connector, instead of ChatGPT living inside WhatsApp.
What happened to 1-800-ChatGPT
OpenAI launched 1-800-ChatGPT at the end of 2024: you saved a number in your contacts and chatted with ChatGPT inside WhatsApp, without an account. In October 2025 WhatsApp updated the terms of its Business API, the paid channel companies use to run bots, so that providers whose main product is a general-purpose AI assistant can no longer use it. Meta's own assistant, Meta AI, is not affected by that rule. OpenAI then announced that the number would stop working on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026, and suggested linking the WhatsApp history to a ChatGPT account before that date. Microsoft's Copilot left WhatsApp for the same reason.
Regulators reacted. Italy's competition authority ordered Meta to suspend the new terms there, and in February 2026 the European Commission sent Meta a statement of objections. Reports from mid-2026 say Meta started allowing rival chatbots on the Business API in Europe while the investigation continues. We could not confirm that 1-800-ChatGPT came back in any country, so treat it as gone unless OpenAI says otherwise.
Why so many tutorials no longer work
Search results for “ChatGPT on WhatsApp” are still full of 2024 and 2025 articles and videos that tell you to save the number and send “hi”. They were right when written. If you try today, the message is not answered. Look at the date of any guide before following it: anything that relies on the number is out of date.
What you can use instead
1. The ChatGPT app itself
For general questions, the ChatGPT app or website does everything the number did, and more. What you lose is the convenience of staying inside WhatsApp, and ChatGPT cannot see your WhatsApp chats this way.
2. Export a chat and paste it into ChatGPT
WhatsApp lets you export a single chat as a text file (chat menu → More → Export chat). You can attach that file to ChatGPT and ask for a summary. It works for a one-off, but it is manual, it is a snapshot that goes stale, and you upload the whole conversation, including other people's messages.
3. Bring WhatsApp into ChatGPT with an MCP connector
ChatGPT accepts remote MCP servers as custom connectors. A WhatsApp MCP server, such as SyncZap, links your existing number as a linked device and lets ChatGPT read, search and summarize the chats you choose, and draft replies that only go out after you confirm. This is the closest thing to “ChatGPT that knows my WhatsApp”, and it does not depend on the Business API rule, because no bot is running on WhatsApp: you are the one asking, in ChatGPT.
4. Business bots on the official API
Companies that want an automated assistant answering customers on WhatsApp use the official WhatsApp Business Platform with a provider. The October 2025 terms limit general-purpose assistants there, but bots focused on a business's own customer service remain allowed. We compare both models in WhatsApp Business API vs linked device.
| Option | Sees your WhatsApp chats? | Effort | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT app | No | None | Free or your ChatGPT plan |
| Export + paste | One chat at a time, as a snapshot | Manual each time | Free |
| MCP connector (e.g. SyncZap) | Only the chats you sync, kept up to date | One-time setup (about 5 minutes) | Your ChatGPT plan + $10 to $53.99/month after a 7-day trial |
| Business API bot | Only conversations with your business number | Development or a provider | Provider fees + Meta's per-message fees |
Setting up WhatsApp inside ChatGPT
The setup takes about five minutes: create an account, scan a QR code like WhatsApp Web, choose which chats may be read, and add the MCP server URL in ChatGPT with OAuth. The full walkthrough is in How to use WhatsApp in ChatGPT, and there is a 3-minute demo below.

A linked-device connector is not an official WhatsApp product, and WhatsApp's terms restrict unofficial automation. SyncZap does no bulk messaging or campaigns and every send needs your confirmation, which keeps usage close to how a person uses WhatsApp Web, but no third party can promise WhatsApp will never act on a number. If that risk is unacceptable for a business-critical number, the official API is the safer route.
Frequently asked questions
Does 1-800-ChatGPT still work on WhatsApp?
No. OpenAI said it would stop working on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026, because of WhatsApp's Business API terms. We found no confirmation that it returned in any country.
Why did WhatsApp remove ChatGPT?
In October 2025 WhatsApp changed its Business API terms to bar providers whose main product is a general-purpose AI assistant. Meta AI is not affected. Regulators in Italy and the EU challenged the change.
Can I still use ChatGPT with my WhatsApp chats?
Yes. Export a chat and attach it to ChatGPT, or add a WhatsApp MCP connector to ChatGPT so it can read the chats you choose and draft replies you confirm.
Is there a free alternative?
The ChatGPT app is free for general questions, and exporting a chat is free. Connectors that keep your chats synced are paid services; SyncZap has a 7-day free trial.
