How to summarize WhatsApp chats and groups with AI

By , CEO of SyncZap · Published

There are three practical ways to summarize WhatsApp with AI: WhatsApp's own summaries of unread messages, exporting a chat and pasting it into ChatGPT or Claude, or connecting WhatsApp to your assistant with an MCP connector so it can summarize any synced chat or group on request. Which one fits depends on how often you need it and whether you want the AI to see more than one chat at a time.

Option 1: WhatsApp's built-in message summaries

WhatsApp has been rolling out private summaries of unread messages, powered by Meta AI, in some countries and languages. When available, a button above the unread messages offers a short summary. It is free and needs no setup, but it only covers what is unread in one chat, you cannot ask follow-up questions across chats, and availability varies by country, language and app version.

Option 2: export the chat and paste it into an AI

  1. Open the chat or group, tap the menu → More → Export chat, and choose Without media.
  2. Save the .txt file and attach it in ChatGPT, Claude or another assistant.
  3. Ask for a summary, for example: “Summarize this group's decisions and open questions from the last 7 days.”

This is free and works with any AI, which makes it good for a one-off. The downsides add up when you do it often: you repeat the export every time, the file is a snapshot that goes stale, voice notes are left out, and you upload everything in the chat, including other participants' messages, to the AI provider.

Option 3: connect WhatsApp to ChatGPT or Claude (continuous summaries)

A WhatsApp MCP connector keeps the chats you choose synced and lets your assistant read them when you ask. With SyncZap, the setup takes about five minutes and then a summary is one question away, in any synced chat or group, for any period.

  1. 1

    Link your number

Create a SyncZap account (7-day free trial) and scan the QR code with WhatsApp → Linked devices. Your number and app stay the same.

  2. 2

    Choose what may be summarized

Turn on sync for the chats and groups you want summarized. Groups have their own switch. Chats without active sync are never read.

  3. 3

    Add SyncZap to your assistant

Add the MCP server URL as a custom connector in ChatGPT or Claude and authorize with OAuth. Guides: ChatGPT and Claude.

  4. 4

    Ask for the summary

Name the chat or group and the period, and say what you want out of it: decisions, requests, deadlines or who is waiting for a reply.

Prompts that produce useful summaries

  • “Summarize the Suppliers group since Monday: decisions, prices quoted and pending questions.”
  • “Which customers asked for a quote this week and did not get an answer?”
  • “Give me a 5-line summary of my chat with Ana from the last 30 days, with dates.”
  • “List every delivery date promised in the Logistics group this month.”
  • “What did people complain about most in the Support group this week?”

A good summary request names the chat, the period and the shape of the answer. Asking for a list with dates and names makes the result easier to check against the original messages, which you should do before acting on anything important.

What about voice notes?

Many WhatsApp conversations are half audio. With SyncZap, voice notes can be transcribed on request from the Pro plan, so “summarize this chat” can include what was said in audio, and from the Max plan every received voice note can be transcribed automatically. See how to transcribe WhatsApp voice notes.

Limits worth knowing

  • History: the connector records new messages from the moment you link. Older messages come from what your phone sends to linked devices: up to 1,000 older messages on Plus and Pro, everything the phone has from Max.
  • Long periods: for very active groups, ask for one week at a time; summaries of months of chat lose detail.
  • AI mistakes: assistants can misattribute who said what. Ask for names and dates and check before forwarding a summary.

Respect the other people in the chat

A group summary processes messages written by people who did not choose your AI tool. Sync only the chats you have a reason to summarize, keep personal chats out (SyncZap has an “all except” mode), and do not paste summaries of private conversations into places others can read. Media is downloaded only when you ask and deleted from SyncZap's servers 24 hours later; details on the security page.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT summarize a WhatsApp group?

Yes. Either export the group and attach the file, or connect WhatsApp to ChatGPT with an MCP connector so it can summarize the synced group on request, for any period.

Does WhatsApp have built-in AI summaries?

WhatsApp is rolling out private summaries of unread messages with Meta AI in some countries and languages. They cover unread messages in one chat at a time.

Is it safe to summarize groups with AI?

Only sync the groups you need, use a tool that does not keep media longer than needed, and remember the other participants did not choose the tool.

Can it include voice notes?

With SyncZap, yes: voice notes are transcribed on request from the Pro plan, so they can be part of the summary.
